Ο πρόεδρος της Ρωσίας Βλαντίμιρ Πούτιν διέταξε να γίνουν άμεσα ασκήσεις για να διαπιστωθεί το αξιόμαχο των ενόπλων δυνάμεων στο δυτικό τμήμα της χώρας σήμερα, μετέδωσαν ρωσικά πρακτορεία ειδήσεων, προβαίνοντας σε μια επίδειξη της ρωσικής στρατιωτικής ισχύος εν μέσω των εντάσεων με την Δύση όσον αφορά την Ουκρανία.

Ο Πούτιν έχει διατάξει απροειδοποίητα διάφορες στρατιωτικές ασκήσεις μεγάλης κλίμακας σε πολλές περιοχές της Ρωσίας αφότου επανήλθε στην προεδρία το 2012, λέγοντας ότι ο στρατός πρέπει να παραμένει σε ετοιμότητα, αλλά η γεωπολιτική συγκυρία αυτή τη φορά δύσκολα θα μπορούσε να είναι πιο ξεκάθαρη.
Ο Πούτιν δεν έχει τοποθετηθεί δημόσια για την κρίση στην Ουκρανία μετά την αποπομπή του προέδρου Βίκτορ Γιανουκόβιτς το Σαββατοκύριακο, έπειτα από την πολύμηνη πολιτική αναταραχή την οποία πυροδότησε η απόφασή του να υπαναχωρήσει από τις υπό διαπραγμάτευση συμφωνίες με την Ευρωπαϊκή Ένωση και αντ' αυτών να εμβαθύνει τις σχέσεις της Ουκρανίας με τη Ρωσία.
Τόσο οι Ηνωμένες Πολιτείες της Αμερικής όσο και ευρωπαϊκά κράτη μέλη έχουν προειδοποιήσει τη Ρωσία εναντίον μιας στρατιωτικής επέμβασης στην Ουκρανία, μια πρώην Σοβιετική Δημοκρατία την οποία ο Πούτιν έχει αποκαλέσει στο παρελθόν «αδελφό έθνος». Ο Ρώσος ηγέτης θέλει η Ουκρανία να ενταχθεί σε μια Ευρασιατική ένωση την οποία οικοδομεί στην περιοχή.
