Ήρθη η προειδοποίηση για τσουνάμι στις ακτές της Φουκουσίμα της Ιαπωνίας, που είχε ανακοινώσει νωρίτερα η μετεωρολογική και σεισμολογική υπηρεσία της χώρας αυτής, δύο ώρες μετά το σεισμό μεγέθους 6,8 βαθμών που σημειώθηκε τα ξημερώματα του Σαββάτου.

Μέχρι στιγμής δεν υπάρχουν αναφορές για ζημιές ή τραυματισμούς, ενώ τα κύματα που σημειώθηκαν ήταν μέγιστου ύψους 20 εκατοστών.

Οι αρχές είχαν διατάξει, για προληπτικούς λόγους, την εκκένωση πολλών παράκτιων πόλεων κοντά στην περιοχή όπου σημειώθηκε ο σεισμός. Μέχρι στιγμής δεν έχουν αναφερθεί προβλήματα στο κατεστραμμένο πυρηνικό εργοστάσιο της Φουκοσίμα.
