Την απόφαση των Ευρωπαίων ηγετών για περαιτέρω παράταση της διαδικασίας της εξόδου του Ηνωμένου Βασιλείου από την ΕΕ μέχρι την 31η Οκτωβρίου ανακοίνωσε ο πρόεδρος του Ευρωπαϊκού Συμβουλίου Ντόναλντ Τουσκ κατά τη συνέντευξη Τύπου που παραχώρησε μετά το πέρας της συνόδου 
 

Παρά τη συμφωνία που κλείστηκε στη Σύνοδο Κορυφής για την αναβολή του Brexit, το ΗΒ μπορεί ακόμη να αποφύγει τη συμμετοχή του στις ευρωεκλογές, εάν επικυρώσει τη συμφωνία αποχώρησης και την πολιτική διακήρυξη που τη συνοδεύει πριν από την 22α Μαΐου, τόνισε πριν από λίγο σε συνέντευξη Τύπου που παραχώρησε μετά το πέρας των εργασιών του Ευρωπαϊκού Συμβουλίου η πρωθυπουργός της Βρετανίας Τερέζα Μέι.

Η Μέι υπογράμμισε ότι οι 27 συμφώνησαν στο «αίτημα-κλειδί» που πρόβαλε, δηλαδή το Λονδίνο να μπορεί να τερματίσει την παράταση της διαδικασίας πρόωρα.

«Αυτό σημαίνει ότι εάν είμαστε σε θέση να εγκρίνουμε μια συμφωνία τις τρεις πρώτες εβδομάδες του Μαΐου, δεν θα χρειαστεί να πάρουμε μέρος στις ευρωεκλογές και θα αποχωρήσουμε επίσημα από την ΕΕ το Σάββατο 1η Ιουνίου», είπε η Μέι σε δημοσιογράφους στις Βρυξέλλες.
